السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
I pray that you are all in the best of health and iman.
Teaching at the youth scheme partnered with Yaseen Youth Tours, was one of the best and developing experiences I’ve had. Working with the youth can teach you so much and allows you to learn so much about yourself. It was the first time working in such an environment and created very fond memories. The scheme consisted of many from Quran, Lessons on story of Musa, workshops, many activities and trips. Most importantly it provided the youth with good company, showing them the importance of a brotherhood and sisterhood in Islam.
Some of the bonding activities which took place on the sister’s side, was building a tower with only marshmallows and sticks, sisters loved this as they worked together and use their minds to figure out which would be the strongest foundation to hold a tall tower. This was alongside an amazing BBQ, which they all got to relax and unwind after a morning of lessons. The sisters also did a blind obstacle course in pairs, where one sister had to guide another through the course being blindfolded. Showing importance of guiding one another towards the right path. Each activity was paired with a reminder in which sisters could take away and reflect on. The blind obstacle course being, “We can all help each other to stay on the right path, and the path to religion isn’t one alone.” Sisters also participated in an amazing workshop by Layla Hashemi, an 11 year old expert in slime making using glitters, sequins, and colour to jazz up their slime.
Some of trips which took place was trampolining, the youth were super excited to take part and had a lot of fun in the trampolining park. To say the least, when it came to the session ending they didn’t want to leave. Paddle boarding and a lesson in Merchant Square in Paddington. A day full of smiles and laughter in a beautiful area, was a new experience, one which most of them had not experienced before. Paintballing, a momentous day for the youth and teachers. A difficulty in getting to the site due to the heavy rain, and walking towards the wrong direction, a reminder was given by Ustadh Omar Hajaj “that whether we go through fortunate or unfortunate situations we must see it as good and accept it as it is from Allah”. This full day out with the youth was a day of bonding, teamwork and exciting games at the paintball site. It was the last day which brought sadness to many including myself.
Workshops included Imam Shakeel Begg (Imam at Lewisham Islamic Centre), came and gave a talk on Leadership. It was a very beneficial for the youth to learn about the importance of Muslims being good leaders. A beautiful statement mentioned “In your positions of leadership be united and help one another to build, as leaders”. Likewise, an inspiring talk by the CEO of Munatada Aid, a very noble charity run with great intentions. Speaking about the great status of charity within Islam and sharing personal experiences with charity. The CEO mentioned a part of a beautiful hadith mentioned by Tabarani “…the most beloved of deeds according to Allah, is that you bring happiness to a fellow muslim…”
The teaching style was taribiyah the way our great scholars were built – sitting in a circle in the masjid. Lessons involving a short Quran session with the sisters and then moving onto the lessons from the story of Musa. Focusing on how the sisters could relate the story of Musa to their own struggles. Making sisters feel that these stories are inspirations to them, and how they can implement them in their own lives. Emphasising on the point that these prophets are humans just like us, and that Allah revealed these remarkable stories so that we can learn from them.
Lovely to see the Youth make new friends where you overhear one sister saying to another “I’ll call you to wake you up for Fajr” and seeing them grow as leaders in their own ways. May Allah accept the seeds we all have planted and allow them to flourish as the youth can be a great asset to society, if given the time, care and right guidance. Overall the scheme was successful, but we ask Allah to accept all that we have done as that is ultimate success. Also thanking Allah for granting us his blessings through this programme. For those that attended and took part we ask that you forgive us for any shortcomings we had towards the you and make Du`a that next year we are better and greater.
